| The Access to Information Act (ATI
)gives every Canadian citizen, permanent resident and individual or
corporation present in Canada the right to access records—in
any format—that are held under the control of a government institution
subject to certain specific and limited exceptions. However, this
site will limit this access to ONLY information held by Citizenship
and Immigration Canada.
This request can be made through the use of CAIPS - Computer Assisted
Immigration Processing System- (information held abroad); FOSS –
Field Operational Support System -(information held in Canada) and
GCMS - Global Case Management System - is for citizenship requests
ONLY.
CAIPS (Computer Assisted Immigration Processing System) is a computerized
system used by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, which keeps track
of each and every case for permanent or temporary residence applications.
This keeps a record of all the information you provide and notes
entered by visa officers who have reviewed your file.
It is part of the Electronic Data Processing (EDP) system used
by the Canadian Immigration offices to process visa applications.
EDP systems are those used to gather or update the information needed
for the operational support of immigration programs.
Your CAIPS file will have valuable information on the processing
of your Canadian permanent and temporary residence applications.
It is not the same as the e-Client found on CIC website, which provides
limited information on the status of your file.
It can also give information on why an application for permanent
or temporary residence visa has been approved or refused, withdrawn
or abandoned, or need for more supporting documents, interview or
waiver.
FOSS (Field Operational Support System) database is a central repository
of information on all persons who have been or are wanted to be
seen by immigration staff. It is the main operational support system
for immigration operations in Canada. It is comprised of many components
including query functions, status entry, document creation, refugee
monitoring, case processing support, medical profiles, registry
functions, client name and address, statistical functions, airport
primary inspection line function, access and security, appeals and
litigation, quality assurance and record maintenance.
GCMS (Global Case Management System) tracks the type of personal
information required to process citizenship and immigration clients.
The type of personal information collected includes, but is not
limited to, client identification (i.e., family name and given names,
gender, date of birth, country of birth, etc.), address information
and history, educational information, criminality, and medical and
travel history.
